The expense of training a pilot in an airplane or an astronaut in a space shuttle was very expensive.  That is why in the 1960s the move towards flight simulation proved to be very effective and cost efficient.

In May of 1975, displayed on a computer screen, Bruce Artwick presented his thesis on a model of the flight of an aircraft and changed the world of flight training. This was the birth of the first flight simulator and just one reason we know Artwick as the first and foremost initiator of air plane games. Just three years later in 1978, Bruce Artwick, along with Stu Moment, founded the software company SubLOGIC. Two years later in 1980 the first air plane games for personal computers hit the market. This particular flying airplane games had black and white wireframe graphics with a mock control panel on the bottom of the screen. This is a huge difference from the flying airplane games we have today.
